CONNECT WITH YEAR 5/6

Learning and Teaching

 

In Year 5/6 We Are Learning To....

READING: The next reading strategy we are focusing on is 'predicting and inferring'. Students will make inferences while they read and recognise cause and effect relationships in their reading.

WRITING: We are completing our work on Explanation text types. We are investigating the structure and features of how to compose explanatory texts.

MATHS: Our Mathematics work will be around summarising our term of work by exploring the different units we have been focussing on. We will work across the level 4 team and celebrate our learning.

INQUIRY: Our Science Celebration day will be on Monday. We would love to see as many families as possible come along to our assembly and then visit our building to look at the range of science experiments we have done this term.

eLEARNING: The Year 5/6 students are using iPads to investigate the range of software available. We will commence our work with iMovie and Garage Band and carry into Term 3.

Marine Ambassadors

Our Marine Ambassadors Taite, Bella, Aaron and James attended their third Workshop on Tuesday. We went to Banyan Reserve at Carrum Downs to see a litter trap being emptied from the wetlands. A representative from South East Water told us that up to 500kg of rubbish is collected from each litter trap. We then made our way to Mordialloc Beach and walked along the canal to see where the water flows out to our bays. We were able to see that no matter where the litter is dropped, it will always make it’s way into our bay. Our take home message - if we do not take action to reduce our litter, we will drown in our rubbish in the next 20 years! Please dispose of your rubbish correctly and put it in the bin and remind others to do the same.

Interschool Sport

Unfortunately none of our sporting teams made it through to finals. 
Netball A finished 2nd
Netball B finished 4th
Football finished 2nd
Volleystars finished 2nd 
Soccer finished 2nd
T-Ball finished 2nd, which is an amazing result. 
Congratulations to those students who tried a new sport for the first time.

Making News

Scientists In Schools

We have been so lucky to have Ivan visit us over the last three weeks taking science lessons in our grades. Its been fantastic for the students to have a real scientist visit us and show us some amazing experiments. We will celebrate this learning by demonstrating some of the experiments we did at our celebration day on Monday.

Maths Olympiad

Mentone Park’s Maths Olympians are continuing to participate in this year’s Maths Olympiads. The students have enjoyed the challenges that are set out for them in each session. Mr Wilton and Mrs Dummond have been impressed with the students across all grades and how they are extending themselves by completing the tasks at school and at home. Maths Olympiads will continue in term 3.

Learning and Teaching

Welcome to a busy and exciting Term 2. We have plenty of fun learning and extra curricular activities coming up that students are already looking forward to. 


In year 5/6 We Are Learning To....

READING: Our reading focus for the following week is Summarising.

We are looking to combine ideas from the text with what the reader already knows. The strategy also summarises ideas and put pieces together to see text in a different way.

WRITING: Understanding the structure and features of a procedural text. Students have been set a task of finding a recipe and following the procedure on how to make the recipe and present their findings to the class.

MATHS:We are studying Measurement, Geometry, Chance and Data as our units of focus. Emphasis will be placed on gathering and representing data.  

 

INQUIRY:Students and staff are excited to attend Scienceworks on 18th May to continue our investigations into how change occurs. We will be visiting the sound and light show as well as taking the opportunity to look at the general exhibition.

eLEARNING:We are investigating a range of software for publishing at present. We have looked at programs such as Tagxedo and will continue to explore other publishing tools such as Wordle. We are excited to be using the iPads to aid our learning.

Please check on both your IPad or a PC if some of the files are not downloading properly.

Interschool Sport

Our Winter Interschool Sport Competition is going well with all teams showing good sportsmanship. The next team we play is St Brigid's followed by a week off due the District Cross Country. Parents are welcome to come along an watch your child participate in their chosen sport.

 

Making News

 


The students represented our school at the 'Big Green Schools' conference at Carrum Primary School. They learnt about Carrum Primary becoming a 5 Star sustainability school. Our students have now brainstormed a range of ideas that we can look at for MPPS.

Passionate Pursuits:

Students are well into their passionate pursuits. These sessions are on Friday afternoons and allow the students to take part in an activity that teachers have an interest in. Some of the pursuits are chess club, yoga, chook shed, pull apart zone, walking club, singing and guitar hero, construction and yarn club.

READING:summarise ideas and put pieces together to see them in a different way. We are also focusing on grammar and language conventions while reading this week.

WRITING:understand the structure and features of a procedural text.


MATHS:build our knowledge and skills around multiplication so we can use efficient strategies to multiply numbers correctly.

 

 

INQUIRY:investigate how the appearance and properties of different substances change when exposed to different temperatures. 

eLEARNING:develop and build research skills when using search engines. We have also been transferring our eLearning skills to the iPads!

Making News


Congratulations again to Dan, Danielle, Bella and Tristan who represented MPPS at Kingston Junior Mayor. What a wonderful job they did too! You may have heard Dan's catchy tune at Assembly...Kingston Kids' Healthy Carnival!

Daisy, Natalia, Julian and Adam have attended their first Workshop at John Monash Science school as our MPPS Little Scientists. They investigated Nano Technology by examining magic sand, sugar granules and the rate at which aspirin tablets dissolve. They are already looking forward to their next Workshop on April 29th. 

 

 

Well done to Julian, Cody and Kiera who worked hard to earn achievement Awards this week.

Year 5 and 6 at the Royal Botanic Gardens

What a great day at the Royal Botanic Gardens! 

The year 5 and 6 students learnt a lot about climate change today. They walked through the green house to learn how the Earth traps heat and discovered many ways to conserve water. They even planted their own indigenous plant to take home.

This tree was struck by lightening and split right down the middle 45 years ago. They saved it by using cranes to push it back together. There are cables in the branches to hold it together. You may even be able to see the scar in the middle of the trunk!
