Grade 5/6 Term 2 Week 1 and 2

Grade 5/6 Term 2 Week 1 and 2

CONNECT WITH YEAR 5/6

Welcome back! It has been full steam ahead as we head into the second term. We have had 5/6 sport, Cross Country trials, the wellbeing presentation, scientists in schools and a very special talk from Sue Crennan (Nat Petty's Nanna). We were lucky to have Sue come in to talk about the judicial system and her experience as a High Court Judge. Her talk triggered some insightful conversations with the students. Thank you so much Sue!

We also welcome a new student to Mrs Sampieri's class, Jy.

Learning and Teaching

READING: Students have continued to identify the main idea of the text using facts or details in their books to support their understanding.

WRITING: This week, we have completed a 'Cold Write' assessment on narratives. The students are becoming comfortable with this process, which is fantastic to see as NAPLAN approaches. Students have also continued to edit and publish a chosen narrative over the past two weeks.

MATHS: Our focus has been on addition and subtraction. Students have been working on their number fluency and worded problems. They have been challenged to think of their own worded problem, using irrelevant number information to distract the reader. This has encouraged students to become alert when reading worded problems and identify the important information in a problem.

INQUIRY: We have introduced a new inquiry topic, 'Biodiversity and Adaptations,' which will be explored during the first half of the term. We have been exploring the desert environment and desert animals, in particular camels and how they have adapted to their environment.
We also have the 'Scientists in Schools' program running this term, which will compliment our inquiry unit.

Grade 5/6 Week 6 and 7

Grade 5/6 Term 1 Week 6 and 7

CONNECT WITH YEAR 5/6

On Monday, the grade sixes took part in a 'Leadership Day' at school. Tailored for our group of 30 students, this was a special opportunity for the grade sixes to work together in team building activities and form goals for their final year at Mentone Park Primary School. The students were inspired by the stories of young leaders in our world and how they are making a difference in their society.
A special thank you to Tania Stefanec for facilitating this invaluable experience for our grade six students.

Senior School Newsletter week 4 and 5

Grade 5/6 Term 1 Week 4 and 5
CONNECT WITH YEAR 5/6

Last week was a jam-packed week with the 5 day intense Beach Swimming Program, Interschool Sport, Tabloid Sports and Parent Teacher Interviews.
We must commend the students on their behaviour throughout the various programs and it was very pleasing to hear both Bayside Aquatics and St. John Vianney's compliment the students and their participation.

Thank you to those parents who made the time to meet with teachers regarding your children. We appreciate any information to help guide our teaching programs. If you have not yet had an interview, please contact your child's teacher via Tiqbiz or in person.

Learning and Teaching

In Year 5/6 We Are Learning To.... develop a Growth Mindset by changing our everyday language. Some examples of transitioning their thought process from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset can be seen in the following photo...

WRITING: We have been exploring the features of a recount using our memories from the holidays and beach swimming. We conducted our first Cold Write, part of the VCOP writing process, to give us our first piece of assessment.
MATHS: Our focus has been on Number and Algebra looking at Place Value. We have been completing Maths challenges and games within each grade. We have also completed a diagnostic test on Number and Operations.

KIDS CONNECT:

We've delved deeper into the concept of Growth Mindset and drawn upon personal experiences of failure, challenges and obstacles and how we have either overcome it, are still working it out or are stuck in a fixed mindset, with suggestions to overcome it from peers.
